Diabetes and Pregnancy
2013 Guidelines
As per the 2013 Canadian Diabetes Association recommendations, in women of childbearing age, it is important to consider the following,

  • Discuss pregnancy plans in each visit
  • Pregnancy should be encouraged to be planned
  • Prior to conception:
    • A1c should be <7.0%
    • Start: Folic acid 5mg per day x 3 months preconception
    • Stop:
      • Non insulin anti-hyperglycemic agents (except metformin in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome)
      • Statins
      • ACEi and ARB either prior to or upon detection of pregnancy
  • Screen for any potential complications (eye appointments, urine ACR)
