Insulin Pumps Caveat Emptor
things you should know before selecting an insulin pump

The selection of an insulin pump is a very personal thing, people have different needs & preferences, and there is no right choice to suit everyone. Look at what is available and make the choice that is right for you. Ask your diabetologist, Diabetes Nurse Educator or other pump users for advice. An insulin pump support group is an excellent place to get information but the ultimate decision is yours.

There has been a lack of good solid information to assist potential pumpers in making a choice of pump. This is information that I have obtained, it is generally reliable though I cannot guarantee that there have not been changes. I would appreciate the assistance of pumpers as they get new information to help keep these pages current. Please E-Mail errors, changes or your experience to diabetes@diabetesclinic.ca

All current model pumps have several programmable basal rates, temporary basal rates, ability to suspend delivery and some form of bolus calculator. They are all solid and reliable with at least 4 year warranty. Sometimes the warranty can be extended to 5 years but there is no guarantee after that so the pump needs to be written off over 5 years. Most insurance programs as well as the Ontario ADP program will consider pump replacement after 5 years. I strongly suggest negotiating for or purchasing additional warranty or extended service plans. Prices are competitive and are generally similar though some discounting may occur at certain times.

Upgrade Policy
Individuals on old Medtronic pump models can upgrade to the Medtronic Veo for a fee of 1500$ and transfer the warranty from their previous pump over to the Veo. For example, if an individual with an older Medtronic pump model has 3 years left on their standard 4 year warranty and wishes to switch to the Veo, the person must pay 1500$ and they will receive a 3 year warranty on the Veo. Individuals with Medtronic pumps which are no longer covered under the standard 4 year warranty can still upgrade to the Veo for 1500$; however, they will have no remaining warranty on their new pump.
Comments
The 554 and 754 Veo pump models are essentially the same, other than differences in reservoir capacities.
